As Australia’s number one shopping site, eBay Australia is committed to ensuring that both buyers and sellers can engage with confidence on our platform. It’s why we work closely with regulators both here and around the world on a range of product safety initiatives. While we take steps to block and remove items reported as unsafe from appearing on our marketplace, protecting children from unsafe products - especially babies - requires vigilance from us all.

With button batteries presenting a range of significant safety risks, especially for young children, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has developed new mandatory safety standards for button/coin batteries.

We are reminding sellers that these standards will become mandatory on 22 June 2022 and enforced by the ACCC.

What does this mean for sellers?

Around the world, eBay helps extend the life of products through the resale of pre-owned and refurbished items on our global marketplace. By keeping products in circulation longer, eBay makes a positive contribution to a robust circular economy that’s essential for the sustainability of our planet.

The “circular economy” is an economic system that aims to keep products and materials in use for longer, increasing the lifespan of things that are manufactured, and reducing waste. Recommerce is one action within the full circular economy and is the process of selling (or re-selling) pre-owned goods,  which helps extend the life of a product. This report focuses on how eBay helps expand circular consumption through product reuse, refurbishment, repair, and related strategies to extend the useful life of consumer goods.

Fancy a weekend on Sunset Boulevard including a VIP dinner with Hollywood stars and foreign Minister Julie Bishop? Maybe a personalised tour of The Lodge and tea with Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull? Or a quiet chat over a bottle of wine with Opposition leader Bill Shorten and Tanya Plibersek? Once again, Australia’s political leaders have generously donated themselves and a host of amazing prizes to help raise funds for some of the nation’s most deserving charities – and eBay is proud to be part of this important event.

eBay’s Head of APAC GR Kristen Foster was featured in the November edition of the popular Australian B2B magazine BiziNet. This cover story documents Kristen’s career path and what motivated her to take on a role with a company like eBay.

On July 31, 2013, eBay Inc. released new research revealing Australian eBay commercial sellers are taking advantage of the revenue opportunity presented through cross-border sales.

eBay Inc.’s report Commerce 3.0: Enabling Australian Export Opportunities showed that Australian SME’s, despite their remoteness, are prolific exporters – when they leverage the Internet, and online marketplaces such as eBay. The report revealed:

  • Share of exports through eBay.com.au grew from 60% cent to 79% from 2006 to 2012
  • 78% percent of eBay.com.au commercial sellers export, increasing to 97% when they reach sales of AUD$100,000
  • eBay retailers in Australia employ up to 50,000 people
  • eBay.com.au commercial exporters sell to an average 28 overseas destinations
  • eBay represents around one in five Australian SME's (with sales between AUD $50,000-AUD $200,000), in other words a signiciant portion of SMEs

The paper was released at an event hosted by the Committee of Economic Development in Australia (CEDA), titled “The Digital Economy fuelling Australia’s export growth,” where attendees included representatives from government, industry and business.

“With some indication that cross border demand for Australian goods is expected to treble in the next five years, now is the time for Australian businesses to look hard at e-commerce for exporting.” said Bruce Gosper, CEO of Austrade (Australian Government’s trade, investment and education promotion agency), who was keynote speaker at the event.
