Yesterday US Senator Jeanne Shaheen posted an Op-Ed in the New Hampshire Union Leader once again pointing out just how destructive the Marketplace Fairness Act will be if passed as currently written. The Senator points out that, not only is this bill bad for a non-sales tax state like New Hampshire, but bad for all US internet-enabled small business. “The so-called Marketplace Fairness Act would require an e-retailer operating from a small shop in, say Keene or North Conway [New Hampshire], to collect and remit sales taxes in more than 9,600 state, county and city tax jurisdictions across the U.S.”
Senator Shaheen goes on to say that the “costs and red tape created by this legislation” would be especially onerous to small businesses who “would have to purchase costly software and retain an accountant to navigate constantly changing tax jurisdictions, tax rates and tax holidays all across America.” As she rightly points out, “small e-retailers would face new costs and be vulnerable to audits from other states.”
