Head of eBay Americas Government Relations David London speaks on illegal wildlife product trade panel

On March 3, 2016, World Wildlife Day, eBay announced a commitment in partnership with the US Wildlife Trafficking Alliance (USWTA) to continue the fight against the illegal wildlife product trade.

To highlight this commitment, eBay’s Head of Americas Government Relations, David London, participated in a USWTA-hosted White House roundtable this week with US Trade Representative Ambassador Michael Froman, Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell, and other corporate representatives. Later, David spoke on a panel with representatives from Etsy, Richline Group, and LiveAuctioneers.com at National Geographic to further outline eBay’s perspective on regulating an online marketplace with nearly 800 million global listings. He discussed how eradicating the illegal wildlife trade must be a collaborative effort which must address not only supply, but also educate the consumer on the illegal and unethical nature of these products in order to dramatically reduce demand.

eBay has long been dedicated to doing its part to protect endangered species and has worked closely with conservation groups, animal welfare organizations, and regulatory authorities to develop company policies designed to protect native and endangered species. The company is working with the USWTA to augment its existing strong anti-trafficking practices by exploring ways to raise awareness about the issue among our community, collaborating with agencies and industry groups to determine new means of detecting illegal wildlife sales online, as well as supporting an online charity auction listing to raise money for USWTA activities.
