Jon Goldberg and David Haugrud, owners of International Marketing Systems in Fargo, North Dakota, recently expressed their concern with the Internet sales tax bill that was passed in the Senate last May. Goldberg and Haugrud operate an online store on eBay called Outdoor Bunker, which sells outdoor recreation equipment. The Marketplace Fairness Act, currently pending in the House, would mandate that all small businesses selling over $1million in sales per year to essentially become tax collectors for every sales tax jurisdiction across the country
Last week, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) launched a new proceeding to determine the best way forward to preserve open Internet access in the United States. Wayne Johnson, owner of Angler’s Habitat, a small tech-enabled business selling fly fishing supplies in Caldwell, Idaho, submitted a letter to The Idaho Press Tribune expressing his concerns with the Internet sales tax legislation currently pending in the U.S. Congress. Johnson, who employs local residents and contributes to his local economy, explained the legislation would require online businesses to serve as tax collectors for states all around the country.
