At the ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nation) Cybercrime Workshop in Singapore, members from eBay Inc.’s Government Relations & Global Asset Protection teams jointly presented on a key issue that eBay Inc.’s is very passionate about - commerce, and how we combat crime to protect commerce.
"Illegal activities that undermine online trust are the biggest threat to the continued development of commerce. Therefore to safeguard the trust that consumers have on us, we do our very best to ensure that the operating space that we are in will not become the next playground for cybercrime," said Wee Choo Hua, Head of Government Relations for Southeast Asia.
Isabelle Neo, Asia Pacific Senior Investigator for Global Asset Protection, also shared, "Filters, blocks and new technology can stop petty & opportunistic crimes, and may be able to predict and prevent large organised crimes, but very often, cybercrime is just an online symptom of a wider and more pervasive real-world crime problem. If these cybercriminals think that there will not be real-life consequences to their actions, there will be no deterrence. Let’s tackle this problem together to ensure that we don’t just solve it online, but ensure that conventional and mainstream structures are well-equipped to deal with such risks."
The workshop was jointly organised by the Singapore Police Force and the New Zealand Police, with the objective of creating a forum for law enforcement units of the ASEAN member states to share their best practices, challenges and initiatives in combating and building capacity against cybercrime. The workshop was attended by the cybercrime law enforcement unit of ASEAN member states and three other technology companies, Facebook, Google & Microsoft.
