This week in Brussels, PayPal hosted a thought leadership event entitled “Unlocking the Future of Payments: Finding the Right Balance Between Future-Proof Regulation, Convenience and Security in the 21st Century Payment Space”. As a global leader in digital payments, PayPal gathered high-level representatives of the EU institutions, senior security experts and payments stakeholders in an effort to stimulate a forward looking debate on innovative payments, cybercrime threats and workable regulatory approaches.
“Technology is rapidly changing the face of global commerce. It not only shapes the way we conduct our everyday lives, but it is a major economic driver for communities around the world,” said Rupert Keeley, PayPal’s Senior Vice President for EMEA. “Technology is also critical to our fight against cybercrime and it is imperative that stakeholders work together to create a policy framework that stimulates growth and security.”
The event consisted of two panels focusing on innovative payment methods, evolution of security risks and future-proof regulations. Panelists included Paul Gillen head of the European Cybercrime Center of the Europol, Pierre Petit Deputy Director General at the European Central Bank and Erik Nooteboom the Head of the Retail Payments and Consumer policy Unit at the European Commission. A keynote speech was given by the Vice President of the EU Parliament, and rapporteur for the Payment Service Directive, Antonio Tajani.
“The event deliberately took place in a highly strategic moment as a new EU Commission and new EU Parliament start their mandate for the next 5 years” said Stefan Krawczyk, eBay Inc.’s Senior Director of Government Relations for Europe. “EU institutional changes provide a great opportunity to prompt reconsideration of the current security policies. Our goal is to utilize the constructive comments exchanged during this event and continue working with policymakers to ensure our company can roll out innovative authentication technologies in Europe without being limited by prescriptive regulation.”
