Each year an increasing number of big ticket companies, venues and concert promoters attempt to impose unfair, anti-consumer and anti-competitive ticket practices for live events across the U.S. These actions often include attempts to pass anti-competitive ticket legislation at the state level. Fans, small businesses and nonprofits are being taken advantage of by a variety of policies and proposed legislation, including those that:
- limit how and where a ticket can be bought and sold
- lock a ticket to the original purchaser's credit card, which prevents resale
- allow the use of BOTs, which are computer programs that "skip the line" by buying up most (if not all) of the tickets to a particular event before they are available to the public
eBay and StubHub are actively working on ticketing bills in 17 states on behalf of fans. This includes:
- Introducing bills in several states that would prohibit the use of BOTs, making more tickets available to fans when they first go on sale
- Supporting bills in states like Massachusetts and Michigan that will deregulate the tickets market, allowing fans to do what they wish with the tickets they own
- Opposing bills in states like Florida that are attempting to create monopolies that force fans to resell their tickets on a specific website
- Opposing bills in a variety of states that seek to restrict the ability of fans to buy and sell tickets on the resale website of their choosing
Protecting fans’ rights is of paramount importance to us. For more information on our stance on ticket sales, check out our Ticket Sales issue page.
