Last week, Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) went down to the Senate floor to urge Senate leadership to not attach the Marketplace Fairness Act to the Internet Tax Freedom Act. Senator Ayotte has been a vocal opponent of the Marketplace Fairness Act and believes that small businesses in New Hampshire and across the country should not be subjected to a burdensome new sales tax regime.
"I've fought to protect online retailers in New Hampshire and across the country from the onerous online sales tax bill, which would force them to become tax collectors for nearly 10,000 jurisdictions nationwide,” said Senator Ayotte. “While we should take up and pass the Internet Tax Freedom Act right away, it makes no sense to pair it with the Internet sales tax collection bill, which obviously undermines Internet freedom."
In addition to her floor speech, Senator Ayotte published an opinion piece in the New Hampshire Union Leader on her continued fight on the Internet sales tax bill. In her op-ed, she wrote “here in the Granite State, we understand that our lack of a sales tax is a source of economic strength that helps create jobs. But most other states see sales taxes as a way to fund bigger government, and they consider online businesses a new source of tax revenue to plug budget holes. Enactment of federal online sales tax legislation would have serious consequences for Internet businesses in New Hampshire and across the nation.”
