The US News and World Report is hosting an online debate on Internet Sales Taxes with readers able to vote on which arguments they find compelling. On the pro-tax side is a representative of the Governors who are supportive of more tax revenues for states, and a progressive think tank arguing that small business rules will be better off if small businesses collect and pay taxes everywhere when they use the Internet.
The two writers opposing expanding sales tax collection powers being given to the states are former Congressman and Presidential candidate Ron Paul, who believes that this is an unwise expansion of taxes and state power over the Internet, and a representative of Americans for Tax Reform who believe that empowering states to enforce tax laws on out-of-state businesses is a dangerous expansion of state power.
eBay believes that entrepreneurs and small businesses that use the Internet, and consumers that shop with small businesses online, will be harmed by legislation that expands state sales tax collection powers and allows state tax collectors to take enforcement action against small businesses that live in states hundreds, and even thousands, of miles away. Any Internet Sales Tax legislation should include a meaningful small business exemption to promote small business empowerment and growth.
