In a recent letter to the editor, Virginia small business owner, John Feigenbaum, defends Congressman Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) from critics that are saying that, as the Chair of the House Judiciary Committee, Goodlatte is hurting Virginia small businesses by failing to pass the Senate-passed Marketplace Fairness Act.
“As a longtime local business owner who depends on the Internet, I see firsthand the costly impact that this legislation would have on companies like mine,” wrote Feigenbaum of the Marketplace Fairness Act. “As a dealer in rare coins, I have always collected sales tax from my customers in Virginia. However, requiring me to collect and remit sales tax to 9,600 different tax jurisdictions nationwide jurisdictions in which I have no representation or legal recourse would put my business at a costly disadvantage.”
Feigenbaum goes on to explain that Chairman Goodlatte actually understands the complications with this bill and how it would impact thousands of small businesses in Virginia. “Online small businesses like ours help to fuel economic growth and employ local residents. Massive changes to tax policy would have many unintended consequences.”
