In October 2014, Hanne Melin of eBay Inc. Public Policy Lab debated stakeholder involvement in policymaking at the European Health Forum Gastein. The full conference report has now been published with this article describing the stakeholder involvement debate.
The promotion of public policy objectives requires the commitment of multiple actors. At the 2014 European Health Forum Gastein, the European Commission's DG SANCO organized a debate between Melin and Professor David Stuckler of Oxford University to spur debate about the right balance in the relationship between public authorities and stakeholders when it comes to setting and realizing policy objectives. The debate turned on the question of how much and what type of involvement should stakeholders have in the development of public policy.
The article by Anna Galinat does an excellent job of summarizing this important debate.
