Devastation in Nepal continues to intensify in the wake of the massive 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Saturday, April 25th. Reports from the Himalayan nation cite more than 5,000 people dead, more than 9,000 injured, and millions more affected across the nation.
Many residents are living in tent camps the government has established while others, fearing additional aftershocks, are sleeping in the streets or open areas away from damaged buildings. Hospitals in the country are overwhelmed by the growing number of injured citizens, running low on space and supplies.
Like many concerned citizens around the world, eBay and PayPal are mobilizing resources to assist relief and recovery efforts. In addition, we have created special opportunities for our community to get personally involved in the relief efforts. Here are some ways that you can partner with eBay and PayPal and aid those in Nepal devastated by the earthquake:
PayPal:
- PayPal’s U.S. homepage features a donation appeal with charity partners working in the region. One hundred percent of the donations will be delivered to the intended charity through PayPal Giving Fund.
- PayPal will give back transaction fees on donations from April 25th to May 26th to any qualifying U.S. 501(c)(3) organization involved in the relief recovery effort.
- PayPal’s global teams are also launching responses:
- PayPal.co.uk is partnering with the Disaster Emergency Committee (a joint appeal benefitting UK charities providing relief in Nepal)
- PayPal.ca is directing donors to the Humanitarian Coalition
- PayPal-brasil.com has launched an appeal to support UNICEF and World Vision
- PayPal.com.au is partnering with UNICEF AU and will be waiving fees for a 7-day campaign.
- PayPal.com.sg is partnering with Singapore Red Cross and will be waiving fees for a 14-day campaign.
eBay:
- eBay’s Giving Works page in the U.S. features the charity partners we are working with in Nepal. The page displays products whose sellers will donate a portion of the final sale price (10 percent to 100 percent, as designated by the seller) to an organization working in the affected areas. eBay will credit seller fees in proportion to the amount the seller donates per completed transaction, with 100 percent of the proceeds delivered to the designated nonprofits.
- eBay for Charity in the UK launched a donation appeal to connect donors to the Disaster Emergency Committee by:
- Making an instant donation via PayPal
- Buying an item supporting the appeal
- Listing an item for sale with a donation (eBay will credit seller fees proportional to the amount donated)
- eBay is also featuring responding charities at checkout in the US and UK, allowing buyers to easily donate to relief efforts.
