Last week, the Governor of New Mexico vetoed a proposal in HB 2 that would have harmed businesses throughout the state. The legislation would have increased taxes and fees for Internet-enabled small- and medium-sized businesses and placed “legally dubious” requirements on the platforms that enable New Mexico sellers to succeed.
Governor Martinez understands that levying additional tax burdens on small- and medium-sized businesses would create significant complications in collecting taxes in numerous jurisdictions. In her veto message, she wrote “The proposed Internet sales tax provisions were poorly crafted and could cause more harm than good."
We thank Governor Martinez for being a champion for small businesses in New Mexico and standing up against harmful Internet taxes!
