The eBay Difference: What Separates eBay from Other Platforms

Today, entrepreneurs and small business owners looking for ecommerce solutions have dozens of options — from social media platforms to niche sites. Yet, millions of them continue to rely on eBay, America’s original online marketplace.

eBay’s seller-friendly programs and policies continue to draw new entrepreneurs to the platform and provide long-term users the opportunity to keep growing their businesses.

“eBay, more than any other platform, is very attuned to its sellers,” Kathy T, a New Yorker who has sold on eBay for more than a decade, said.

Never Competing With Sellers

One of the key things that differentiates eBay from other platforms is its commitment to not competing with its sellers. Some ecommerce providers begin to offer their own versions of popular items, after noticing their sellers’ success.

“Other platforms compete against us. They use our data against us. eBay doesn’t do that. It really is the most seller-friendly platform,” Michael S., who oversees silverware company One4Silver’s ecommerce efforts, said.

This practice ensures small business owners and managers can feel confident selling their wares on eBay.

Small Business Programs

eBay’s efforts to set its sellers up for success go well beyond not competing with them. The marketplace offers a variety of tools and programs designed to help businesses reach new customers and grow.

Through eBay’s International Shipping Program, sellers can easily reach customers in 200 countries. Sellers in the program send international sales to a US shipping hub, where hassles like customs clearance and international returns are covered for them. With 43% of eBay sellers living in rural areas and small towns, this program connects American entrepreneurs to the world.

“I love eBay because it has the broadest reach, not just nationally, but internationally. They make it so easy,” Jason T., a Hawaii-based seller who says roughly 10-15% of his sales are international.

In addition to the International Shipping Program, eBay offers sellers real-time data about their shops, so they can optimize their practices, and is constantly rolling out new tools designed to make listing items easier.

eBay invests in these programs and tools because we know we only succeed and grow when our sellers do.
